Science, Technology and Math
In its tenth year, the Science, Technology and Math program provides students with state-of-the-art instructional science, technology and math experiences
in the classroom.
Projects are:
Impact on Education is completing the implementation of handheld, "clicker" technology in K-8
middle school math and science classrooms throughout the district. Using clickers, students respond to questions presented by the
teacher via a computer and projector. Answers are instantly and automatically captured and displayed, allowing teachers to modulate
their pace and customize learning for particular groups.
Clickers are making headlines!
Twenty Ninth Street- Fiske Planetarium Partnership-
This partnership supported by Twenty Ninth Street provides funding for the "Starlab" portable planetarium and bi-lingual specialists
to visit schools and provide curriculum instruction and astronomy presentations to 3rd and 8th grade classes throughout the District.
GAMES- Girls at the Museum Exploring Science-
This partnership with CU funds after-school programming for 4th and 5th grade girls consisting of seven weekly visits to the
University of Colorado Museum of Natural History to explore the sciences of archaeology, botany, entomology, paleontology and
zoology through hands-on activities with CU women scientists.
Amgen Life Sciences Program-
This partnership supported by Amgen supports the development and dissemination of inquiry-based life science curriculum and
materials by science teachers to seventh graders throughout BVSD.
Take My Teacher Home-
Currently, 21.45% of BVSD kindergarten students are identified as below grade level or non-proficient in reading, according to district assessments and standards. Studies show that extending the learning day, differentiating instruction, and clear guided lessons can help this target population make
significant growth towards grade level status and beyond. The proposed "Take My Teacher Home"
project uses teacher recorded lessons, songs, and activities loaded on an iPod Shuffle along with an
activity bag sent home with students to extend their learning day.
Algebra 1 Interventions-
As BVSD moves towards "Algebra for all" in ninth grade it becomes imperative to rethink how we deliver algebra instruction. Students that have traditionally struggled in secondary mathematics courses need to be provided with new and innovative instructional techniques based on current research about best practices. This grant will enable Centaurus High School and Monarch High School to provide Algebra I to all freshman students, while supporting those students who enter high school under prepared for the course. In addition to supporting students, this grant will provide the resources necessary to compare and contrast two proven instructional interventions: a "double-dose" course at CHS and a "double-block" course at MHS. The results of this comparison will inform future math interventions in BVSD.
25th Anniversary Animation Contest-
Students at all BVSD schools will be invited to create 2 minute videos using customized software developed by Kerpoof. After-school clubs will be funded at high-needs schools to ensure equity and inclusion. Schools will receive points when students create videos and when the videos are viewed by others. Participating schools will be acknowledged with a plaque and pizza party.
