We accelerated the pace of professional development to ensure interventionists and teachers were trained and prepared to help students with learning differences, namely dyslexia.
Dyslexia is a neurobiological learning disability characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction (International Dyslexia Association, 2002).
In 2019, in partnership with BVKID (Boulder Valley Kids Identified with Dyslexia), we set a $50,000 goal to build a literacy fund to specifically help meet the needs of students with dyslexia in Boulder Valley’s public schools.
We reached our goal and in the summer of 2020, 46 BVSD interventionists and classroom teachers were trained in the Orton Gillingham approach to better support students.
