Crayons to Calculators
In 2020, Crayons to Calculators reached more students than ever before, distributing 15,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to local students.
Created in 2005, Crayons to Calculators is a collaborative program managed by Impact on Education to ensure that all students in Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley School Districts start school with the supplies they need to succeed. With the help of Title Sponsor Western Disposal and other local businesses and generous individuals and with hundreds of volunteers dedicating thousands of hours, Crayons to Calculators provides about 11,000 backpacks filled with essential supplies to schools so they can be distributed to students in need in typical years.
Due to COVID-related school closures, we were called upon to do even more this year. To begin with, in March 2020, when school doors were abruptly closed, we immediately assessed our inventory and were able to assemble about 3,000 backpacks with supplies for our elementary-aged kids, which were distributed with Chromebooks to all families who needed them. Then, in fall 2020, as we all prepared for a year that began with remote learning, we knew how imperative it would be to provide supplies so all students could participate and learn from home. We ordered additional kits, set up a drive through and delivery distribution system to reach all students, and wound up providing 12,000 kits to students.
